Independent archival and survey research on Charles Lummis's El Alisal, submitted for the Peterson Prize (National Park Service's Historic American Buildings Survey and the AIA). Built by hand from 1896 to 1910 on the Arroyo Seco, from stone and wood gathered on-site. A haphazard, self-made home that embodies the California myth of westward reinvention. 

Surveyed entirely by hand — tape measure, contour gauge, angle finder, level, plumb bob — per Peterson Prize standards. Since the house was never built from plans, every element is unique. Nothing could be assumed to repeat at a standard interval. Documented its additions chronologically, and consulted with USC's Dr. William Deverell.
